about

This is a recording of the original production of Miriam, a play about faith and justice, performed by the Damascus Outreach Players Theater Company in Damascus, MD, featuring Lisa Eden in the title role as Miriam, and Scott Cole Fulton as the Teacher. Cover art by Rick Crites.

Miriam was written in the tradition of Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar, and tells a story set in the past that speaks to the issues of today. Set 2,000 years ago in a land inhabited by two rival and alienated cultures, one Samaritan and one Jewish, the play reveals a world not unlike the world of today -- a world often divided by class, ethnicity, and religion; a world in which violence is sometimes perpetrated in the name of God; a world in which many live under the thumb of oppression. Emerging above the fray and defying the norms of her day comes Miriam, a woman of Samaria and a follower of “the Teacher,” himself Jewish. The play finds Miriam, her Jewish friend, Martha, and a rag-tag collection of the Teacher’s followers one to two years after the Teacher’s death, struggling together to live in fulfillment of “the Way” demonstrated through the Teacher’s life and teachings.

Miriam is a woman who’s life has found meaning in her service to the hurting people of Samaria, and, in particular, Samaritan women. The sources of her strength are her connection to her cross-cultural community of faith and her remembrance of the Teacher. Her outspokenness about the oppression of her people and her willingness to co-mingle with Jews ultimately make her a mark both for segregationist zealots and for the Romans who rule over the region as an occupying force. She ultimately pays for this notoriety with her life. Her friends, both Jewish and Samaritan, come together to grieve over Miriam, and, through their unity find the strength to rise above their loss and rededicate themselves to the path that Miriam, and the Teacher before her, had walked.
